Background of the Study
Exchange rate fluctuations have a profound impact on local businesses by influencing pricing strategies, cost structures, and competitive dynamics. In Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, businesses that rely on imported inputs or engage in international trade are particularly vulnerable to changes in exchange rates. Volatile currency values can lead to unpredictable cost increases and affect profit margins, posing significant risks to business operations (Obinna, 2023). While some firms may benefit from favorable shifts, the overall uncertainty disrupts long-term planning and market competitiveness (Chukwu, 2024). This study examines the mechanisms through which exchange rate fluctuations affect local businesses in Uyo, assessing both direct and indirect economic impacts. It further explores strategies adopted by businesses to mitigate adverse effects and leverage potential benefits, integrating economic theories with empirical data to offer a comprehensive understanding of exchange rate dynamics (Ike, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Local businesses in Uyo face significant challenges due to exchange rate fluctuations, which create uncertainty in pricing, cost management, and market competitiveness. The volatile nature of the currency has led to unpredictable cost increases and reduced profit margins, adversely affecting business sustainability (Okafor, 2023). This study aims to investigate the extent of these impacts and identify effective strategies employed by businesses to mitigate risks associated with currency volatility, thereby ensuring economic resilience.
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze the impact of exchange rate fluctuations on local business operations.
To evaluate the coping strategies adopted by businesses in Uyo.
To recommend measures for mitigating adverse effects of exchange rate volatility.
Research Questions:
How do exchange rate fluctuations affect local business costs and profitability?
What coping mechanisms are used by businesses to handle exchange rate risks?
What policy interventions can stabilize the economic impact of exchange rate volatility?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Exchange rate fluctuations significantly impact business profitability.
H2: Businesses that adopt robust risk management strategies experience fewer adverse effects.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the impact of exchange rate fluctuations on local businesses in Uyo. The findings will offer practical insights for businesses and policymakers, leading to improved risk management and economic stability in the region (Chin, 2025).

This study is limited to the investigation of exchange rate fluctuations and their impact on local businesses in Uyo Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on currency volatility and business coping strategies.
